Halitosis, also known as oral malodour, is another term for bad breath. Halitosis can be experienced mildly or severely, and can last for short or long periods of time. Halitosis is quite common - up to 50% of people will experience persistently bad breath in their lifetime, and while there are many causes for it, if left untreated halitosis can lead to long term oral health issues and can impact confidence. Thankfully, bad breath can be treated both professionally and at home with the right oral care solutions. The first step is to address the cause of the bad breath and then treat those causes to alleviate halitosis.

Halitosis Treatment

Instilling a Good Oral Hygiene Routine

The first step in addressing halitosis is to assess your oral care routine. Brushing with a Sonic Toothbrush twice daily will ensure your teeth and gums are cleaned thoroughly, while flossing and using mouthwash will also hello combat the bacteria that lead to halitosis. When gums and teeth are clean and healthy, bad breath can be managed and alleviated.

Active Ingredients

It’s also important to ensure that the ingredients in your oral care essentials are clean, active and clinically proven. Active ingredients work to protect tooth and gum health and will prevent halitosis.

Reasons For Halitosis

Poor Oral Hygiene

A lack of brushing, flossing and poor oral hygiene are the main causes of halitosis. When oral hygiene is not maintained, the bacteria that forms on the teeth, gums and mouth, release a gas when they come into contact with food. This gas smells unpleasant and is a sign that halitosis is occurring. If bad breath is persistent over a long period of time it can be a sign of gum disease or tooth decay. While bad breath can be unpleasant, it is easily combated. Visit your dentist routinely, implement a regular, thorough oral care routine and continue to brush teeth and floss daily to ensure halitosis is managed, combatted and prevented.

Smoking

Smoking is another main cause of halitosis. Smoking causes gum disease which can result in bad breath and it also dries out the mouth which can affect the smell of breath. Though halitosis can be managed by maintaining a good oral care routine, only giving up smoking will eradicate halitosis completely.

Certain Foods & Drinks

One of the main causes of temporary halitosis is food and drink. Foods like garlic and onion can cause bad  breath, while alcohol can also be a cause. This kind of bad breath is easy to alleviate through brushing, mouthwash or simply by avoiding foods that result in halitosis.
