Halitosis, oral malodor, and bad breath can be caused by many things, including how some foods and drinks are digested in the stomach. In this way, some bad breath can come from the stomach. Bad breath is extremely common and is experienced by 50% of people throughout their lifetime. While poor oral health, nicotine use, tooth decay, and gum disease can all contribute to bad breath, certain foods and drinks can also be major causes of bad breath. By identifying these foods and drinks in the diet and mitigating their effects, limiting intake, or eliminating them completely, bad breath and halitosis can be treated and prevented. If bad breath or oral malodor has been caused by food and drink and comes from the stomach, it can be combated at home with the right oral care routine and solutions.

Bad Breath Treatment

Oral Care

The first step in addressing halitosis is to assess your oral care routine. Brushing with a Sonic Toothbrush twice daily for two minutes each time will ensure your teeth and gums are cleaned thoroughly, preventing bacteria and plaque buildup.

Our Bad Breath Kit includes toothpaste for gum health, foaming mouthwash for bad breath and bad breath spray - everything you need to combat bad breath.

The less bacteria can thrive in the mouth, the less likely bad breath is to occur. Flossing daily is an important tool when preventing and treating bad breath. Use a Water Flosser for optimal results. Water flossers offer a gentle alternative to traditional flossing, using high-frequency water pulsations to efficiently remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria, leaving teeth and gums exceptionally clean. Mouthwash will also help combat the bacteria that lead to halitosis. When gums, teeth, and mouth are clean and healthy, bad breath is far less likely to occur.

Active Ingredients

It’s also important to ensure that the ingredients in your oral care essentials are clean, active, and clinically proven. Active ingredients work to protect tooth and gum health and will prevent halitosis and bad breath, and it should be noted that using a toothpaste that does not contain active ingredients will not aid bad breath prevention and is not recommended by dentists. Using oral care formulations that don’t contain the essential active ingredients necessary to combat common oral health concerns will ultimately harm your oral health. Instead, we recommend using oral care solutions that contain effective, clean, vegan-friendly, clinically proven ingredients only.  Look for formulations that contain Fluoride and Chlorhexidine, both of which are clinically proven to help maintain overall oral health and combat bad breath.

At Spotlight, our goal is to educate you on your oral health, help you to identify your oral health goals, and then achieve them by using our prescriptive oral care solutions. Our clean, clinically proven, active ingredient-infused formulations have been created specifically to treat your oral care concerns and we are on hand to make sure you get the most from your smile.

Avoid Foods that Cause Bad Breath

One of the most effective ways to treat bad breath is to avoid foods that cause bad breath. Acidic foods like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, tinned fish, garlic, and onion all contribute to bad breath due to their effects on saliva production and digestion in the body. By avoiding these foods you can stop bad breath. You can also minimise their effects by brushing teeth or using mouthwash after consumption.

Regular Dental Check Ups

It is vital that if bad breath persists, despite good oral care at home, you visit your dentist. If the odor is in fact tooth decay, a rotten tooth or teeth, or is an indicator of another underlying health concern, only your dentist can assess and treat you. Rotten or decaying teeth must be treated professionally to save the teeth and protect oral health.

Prescriptive Oral Care

If you are looking to treat halitosis effectively at home, always choose oral care solutions that are tailor-made to combat bad breath. The more prescriptive your oral care solutions are, the better results you will see in your oral health.

Avoid Drinks That Cause Bad Breath

Coffee commonly causes bad breath due to its effect on the mouth’s saliva levels, as does alcohol. Make sure you hydrate with water after caffeine and alcohol use to ensure bad breath is prevented and use a mouthwash and brush teeth to combat bad breath from these drinks, too.
